From Influencers to AI Experts: Navigating Non-Traditional Career Options

The new generation is a generation of explorers and risk takers. They are not happy in the mundane, 9-5 jobs. They want to do something different, something off-beat. As an experienced career counsellor in Pune for over a decade, I meet a lot of  youngsters who want to be bloggers, or YouTube Creators or Social Media Influencers.  I also meet parents who are not sure whether these are great career paths or not for their children to go on.

Through this blog, I want to address the latest trend of “Unconventional Career Paths”.  In a world brimming with possibilities, traditional career paths are no longer the ONLY route to success. With the rise of digital platforms and technological advancements, many  unconventional career opportunities have emerged. Let’s get to know them in-depth:

  1. Social Media Influencer:

Social media influencers have immense popularity shaping trends, and influencing consumer behaviour. Becoming an influencer involves building a strong online presence, creating engaging content, and fostering a community of followers.

If you want to become a social media influencer you should know what platform to choose (facebook, instagram, youtube etc.). Next, you should know what type of content to create – from fashion to fitness, from travel to food, there are a lot of options. Finally, you will have to master the art of being on camera and keep working consistently to build your brand.

Good influencers carve out niches that resonate with their audience, partnering with brands and monetizing their influence. One could start this as a side hustle at first until it grows.

  1. Podcaster:

In the age of audio consumption, podcasts have emerged as a powerful medium for storytelling and knowledge dissemination. Whether it’s discussing niche topics or interviewing experts, podcasters have the freedom to explore their passions and share their insights with the world.

To start a podcast, all you need is a microphone, basic recording software, and a compelling idea. From there, it’s all about consistency, creativity, and connecting with your audience.

3.  Blogger:

Blogging continues to be a thriving avenue for those with a knack for writing and a passion for sharing their thoughts and experiences. Whether it’s fashion, lifestyle, travel, or finance, bloggers carve out digital spaces where they can express themselves, connect with like-minded individuals, and even monetize their content through affiliate marketing, sponsored posts, and ad revenue.

4. Content Writer:

In an era driven by digital content, skilled writers are in high demand. From crafting compelling blog posts to creating engaging social media copy, content writers play a crucial role in shaping brand narratives and driving audience engagement. To thrive in this field, one must hone their writing skills, adapt to various tones and styles, and stay updated on industry trends. There are several workshops and certification available for the same online.

  1. Copywriting:

Copywriting involves writing content for advertising, marketing, or promotional purposes. From catchy taglines to compelling product descriptions, copywriters convert complex ideas into concise and impactful messages. To excel in copywriting, one must master the art of persuasion, understand target audiences, and continually refine  writing skills . There are various certifications for this available online.

  1. Machine Learning and AI Careers:

In the realm of technology, machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) are reshaping industries and creating new career opportunities. From data scientists to AI engineers, professionals in this field harness the power of algorithms and data to solve complex problems, automate processes, and drive innovation. For this one must acquire a strong foundation in mathematics, programming, and data analysis, and stay abreast of advancements in the field. There are several specialised courses available for this online

  1. E-commerce Entrepreneur:

With the rise of online shopping, e-commerce entrepreneurs create and manage digital storefronts to sell products and services. From dropshipping to creating digital products, e-commerce entrepreneurs leverage digital platforms to reach customers and generate revenue.

To start a career in e-commerce, begin by identifying a niche market and conducting market research. While formal education in business can help, it’s not essential. Develop a solid business plan, choose an e-commerce platform, and start building your online store.

Last, But Not The Least

There are no right choices or wrong choices in the modern world. It is however important to do your research and understand the scope of the career fully, before you commit to something. Take your time and don’t hurry into an unconventional career path, just because it looks “cool” now.

It takes a lot of hard work and patience to achieve great success. They say Rome wasn’t built in one day, so why should we expect anything different.

This is your friendly career counsellor, signing off.

Until next time.
